Statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - France (02) 07.08.2025

The Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of the French Republic in Algeria was summoned to the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday by the Director of Immunities and Privileges.

On this occasion, two notes verbales were delivered to the French diplomat.

The first note verbale formally notified the Algerian side of the 2013 Algerian-French Agreement on Reciprocal Visa Exemption for Holders of Diplomatic and Service Passports. This denunciation goes beyond the simple suspension notified by the French side and definitively terminates the very existence of this agreement.

Consequently, and without prejudice to the deadlines stipulated in the agreement, the Algerian Government has decided to impose visa requirements on holders of French diplomatic and service passports, with immediate effect. It also reserves the right to make the granting of these visas subject to the same conditions as those established by the French government for Algerian nationals. This is a strict application of the principle of reciprocity, which expresses, above all, Algeria's rejection of French attempts at provocation, intimidation, and bargaining.

The second note verbale aims to inform the French side of the Algerian authorities' decision to end the free provision of real estate belonging to the Algerian state to the French embassy in Algeria. This note also announces the review of the considerably advantageous leases entered into by the embassy with the Algerian OPGIs and invites the French side to send a delegation to Algiers to begin discussions on this matter.

It should be recalled that the Algerian diplomatic representation in France does not benefit from any similar advantages. Consequently, the Algerian action thus decided also aims to introduce balance and reciprocity into the overall Algerian-French relationship.
